The Iowa Community HUB is seeking a passionate, experienced leader to join our Board of Directors as Board Development Committee Lead.
This is a unique opportunity to play a foundational role in shaping the governance and future of an emerging nonprofit committed to improving health and well‑being across Iowa. In this role, you’ll help design and lead a comprehensive board development strategy covering recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement, while partnering closely with the Board Chair and Executive Director.

Position Summary
The Board Member serving as Board Development Committee Lead plays a strategic and operational role in strengthening the governance capacity of an emerging nonprofit organization. With support from a Board Development consultant, this Board Member helps design and execute a comprehensive board development strategy that includes recruitment, vetting, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement of governance volunteers. The position is ideal for an individual who brings experience in nonprofit governance, talent development, or organizational leadership and who is committed to building a high-performing board.
Key Responsibilities
Board Governance & Leadership
- Serve as an active and engaged member of the Board of Directors, contributing to overall governance, fiduciary oversight, and strategic direction.
- Partner with the Board Chair and Executive Director to ensure board structure, practices, and culture support the organization’s mission, values, and growth trajectory.
Board Development Committee Leadership
- Lead the Board Development Committee, helping establish annual priorities, timelines and measurable goals.
- Guide the full lifecycle of board service: identification, cultivation, recruitment, vetting, nomination, onboarding, training, and ongoing support.
- Develop and maintain a board recruitment pipeline aligned with the organization’s skills matrix, diversity objectives, and long-term governance needs.
- Ensure that board policies, position descriptions, and governance documents remain current and reflect best practices.
- Support performance evaluation processes, including self-assessments and board effectiveness reviews.
Recruitment & Community Engagement
- Actively represent the organization to prospective board candidates and broader community networks.
- Leverage personal and professional relationships to strengthen recruitment channels and expand board reach.
- Participate in informational meetings, interviews, and candidate vetting.
Onboarding & Training
- Oversee development and delivery of onboarding materials, board manuals, and orientation sessions.
- Identify ongoing board education needs; recommend and coordinate training, workshops, and resources.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the Executive Director and Board Chair to ensure seamless communication regarding board development activities.
- Provide clear reports and recommendations to the full board on committee progress, recruitment activity, and governance enhancements.
Qualifications
- Prior experience as a nonprofit board member, committee chair, or senior nonprofit leader preferred.
- Understanding of nonprofit governance principles, including fiduciary duties, board structures, and best practices.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within governance and leadership.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.
- Comfortable initiating outreach and engaging prospective board members.
Time Commitment
- Board meetings: 6 per year
- Board Development Committee meetings: monthly until firmly established
- Additional time for candidate cultivation, interviews, onboarding sessions, and special projects.
